Over 350 different torsion springs in stock

A torsion spring is designed to be twisted, unlike a compression spring which is designed to be compressed and an extension spring which is designed to be extended. Torsion coil springs are often used in ‘pop-up’ operations such as are used in digital cameras, CD players and other similar items.

Direction of helix

Good design dictates that torsion springs should be used in the direction that winds the coil. When enquiring and ordering torsion springs, be sure to specify either a left or right hand wind.

Mandrel size

Torsion springs are normally used over a supporting mandrel (shaft or arbor). Suggested mandrel sizes allow approximately 10% clearance at the deflections listed. If greater deflection is required, the mandrel size should be reduced.

Specfications

Direction of Helix: Left hand and right hand configurations.

Ends: Straight ends are standard. Special end forms are available.

Tolerances:
Torque: + or – 10%
O.D: 5%

Materials

Stainless Steel Wire to DIN 17224, No.1.14310 or BS 2056 302S26.

Torque

The torque values shown are suitable for average use. However, with correct mounting and a reduction by approximately 20% of the torque values shown, the life of the spring will be considerably. It should be noted that “R” (radius) where force is applied is always ½ if “L” (leg length).

For inspection purposes the load should always be applied at the Radius (“R“).

To translate the torque values shown to the direct load:

Use formula:- P equals T over R

P = Load applied at Radius (“R”)
T = Torque

Torque values at intermediate deflections can be calculated by direct proportion.

R” – Position of load
R” – In all cases in half the value of “L”
L” – Is the leg length
